The treatment
What sclerotherapy is, and what it is not
A small amount of medicine, called a sclerosant, is injected into a suitable superficial vein. It irritates the vein lining so the vessel closes and is gradually absorbed by the body, while blood continues through other veins.
At Elite Medical it is used for selected spider and reticular veins on the legs. It is not a treatment for all varicose veins or for deeper venous disease.
The doctor may use polidocanol or sodium tetradecyl sulphate. The preparation and concentration are selected by the clinician for your individual case.
Possible benefits for suitable veins
- Treated veins may become less noticeable over time
- A non-surgical option, carried out as outpatient care
- Improvement is gradual; results and session numbers cannot be promised
Before treatment
Assessment comes first
The doctor examines your legs and takes a medical history to decide whether injection treatment is appropriate. If larger veins, swelling, skin changes or symptoms suggest something deeper, an ultrasound or referral may be recommended instead.
Please tell the doctor about:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Any previous blood clots (DVT or pulmonary embolism)
- Allergies and all medicines you take
- Poor circulation or earlier vein treatment
